Bush Finally Admits Responsibility For Poor Response to Katrina

It took a little more than two weeks but President Bush has finally accepted responsibility for the poor response by the federal government to Hurricane Katrina.
Tuesday, the president was speaking at a joint press conference with Iraqi President Jalal Talabani when a reporter asked if Americans could be confident that the government is ready to confront another natural disaster or terrorist attack in light of Katrina.
Bush answered, 'Katrina exposed serious problems in our response capability at all levels of government, and to the extent that the federal government didn't fully do its job right, I take responsibility.'
Mr. Bush continued, 'I want to know what went right and what went wrong. I want to know how to better cooperate with state and local government to be able to answer that very question that you asked.
'Are we capable of dealing with a severe attack or another severe storm? And that's a very important question and it's in our national interest that we find out exactly what went on so we can better respond,' Bush said.
Prior to today's partial admission of poor government response, Bush had begged reporters and politicians not to 'play the blame game.'
Thousands of Americans died in the Gulf Coast region in large part due to slow and poorly organized response by FEMA. FEMA chief Mike Brown resigned on Monday under heavy criticism for the agency's lack of preparedness and failure to act to save lives.
As a result of the government's poor response to Katrina, high gasoline prices and the ongoing war in Iraq, the president's approval ratings are now at an all-time low, hovering just below 40 percent according to most recent polls.
