Victory! Marxist/Anarchist party wins seat in Quebec election!

The most successful far left party in all of North America (excluding Mexico) is, without a doubt a provincial party in Québec called Québec Solidaire.


As of tonight, QS has become the only party in North America containing various sub-party groupings which openly identify as: Anti-Stalinist Marxist, radical, pacifist, anarchist, socialist, environmentalist and feminist, to hold a seat at the state or provincial level.




Unfortunately, the Québec Solidaire candidate in my riding (Hull), Bill Clennett, only placed third after the Parti Québécois and the Liberals. Clennett, for those of you who don’t know, rose to fame in that quintessentially Canadian way: he was once literally strangled by then Prime Minister Jean Chrétien on national television.


While I strongly disagree with Québec Solidaire’s sovereigntist leanings, the victory tonight in the provincial riding of Mercier is nothing short of one of the most important victories for the far left in the industrialized world. This is one of the first times that I’m aware of since 1872 where anarchists and Marxists did that which commentators of all stripes had long claimed to be impossible: They worked together within a single party structure and they succeeded.


If you want to see democracy in action, look no further than Québec Solidaire.


If you want to see the kind of anarchist/Marxist/social democratic co-operation that must characterize 21st Century struggle, look no further than Québec Solidaire.


If you want to see victory in the riding of Mercier, look no further than Québec Solidaire and Amir Khadir.

GREECE: DAYS OF RAGE or INSURRECTION?

The Greek uprisings are the most radical in Europe since the Italian Hot Autumns of the late 70’s and Paris 1968. But the next 48 hours - encompassing today’s funeral of Alexandros and tomorrow’s general strike -will be decisive. Have we witnessed three days of rioting followed by a return to the status quo and inevitable repressionor the beginnings of an insurrection. Will the struggle broaden out and take on new forms or will the parties of the Left be able to contain it. The Greek comrades will need to control permanently territory they now hold only in the evenings…….they have shown the boldness and resolution to do so. Greece is the only country in the world where anarchists are in suffiicient numbers to constitute an effective social movement…but if ever the comrades in Berlin,Hamburg,Copenhagen needed to rise up its now……spreading the flames across Europe is the only solidarity that can further embolden our comrrades. We dont need paper to write clever analyses of the Greek events after they’ve happened we need paper to set alight the tinder box of recession Europe now.

‘EVERYTHING IS BURNED…..

I had to leave earlier from the demo…. I am sure there are still a lot going on but could not stand there any longer I had big breathing problems… I have to trash my mask for sure, it did not help at all….
I am 30 years old, I have been to a number of demos but what happened today is out of any imagination….. I have NEVER seen something like this. NEVER. This is not the usual riot against riot police this is a BIG PUBLIC OUTRAGE. 15000 people on the streets tonight and HUDGE number of them participating on the riots. EVERYTHING IS BURNED. COMPLETELY. From the beggining of the demo, in Omonia, up to near the Greek parliament building (about 3 km) EVERYTHING got destroyed… I left after this point I had to walk for miles in order to get out of the city centre because there was nothing working, no tube, nothng…There is not a single bank, shop, or anything that remained undamaged…. The police responce was big, a LOT of chemicals, I am sure some “new” ones as well as I have a different “feeling” than on other days and also a lot of plastic bullets. A lot of people injured because of them. At a point a group of policemen had a girl down and were hitting her visiously. Others were hitting midle aged people that were on the demo. I did see policemen THROWING THINGS IN SHOPS AND STORES… Especially if those items WERE ON FIRE.
I am speaking to people on the phone now… in the department of Law of the university of Athens there are people trapped inside… The police are outside and are throwing chemicals INSIDE the buidling from the windows… It is a building with a lot of floors and one big stairway that connects them…. I suppose that the most people are trying to go to the top floors in order to avoid the chemicals as much as possible.’

ANARCHISTS CONTROL CENTRAL ATHENS TONIGHT

Anarchists are controlling large parts of central Athens tonight near to the parliament buildings. Running battles with police, banks wrecked and a major department store on fire. Riots spread to Rhodes, Crete and Cyprus. Wednesday’s general strike could mark either an end or a press forward to insurrection.
