Veterans' art lays bare trauma of war
(Sunday 30 November 2008)
ART created by veterans trying to recover from the trauma of war will go on show on Monday in London.
Veterans aged 30 to 86 from the British army, Royal Navy, RAF, merchant navy and the reserves have contributed to the Art and Conflict exhibition at the Together Our Space Gallery in central London, which is thought to be the first of its kind in Britain.
All the artists are receiving support and treatment from Tyrwhitt House in Surrey, one of three treatment centres managed by ex-services mental health charity Combat Stress.
The exhibition is designed to raise awareness and understanding of the impact that psychological injuries associated with service life have on the lives of veterans.
Tyrwhitt House art therapist Jan Lobban said: "It is unusual for art therapy images to be exhibited, as they form part of treatment, but the veterans are keen to highlight the issues expressed within their work so that it might help others and therefore have given permission for the work to be shown.
"The content of the imagery gives the viewer a unique insight into the psychological consequences of trauma through military service."
