Exclamation On Monday I returned from a third-world country named Southern Mississippi.

When I first got to Southern Mississippi in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, it did not take me long to realize what a basic issue this was down there. I remember talking to a lady who was working gutting out ruined homes. She told me that she was UNABLE to leave the area - even though she wanted to. Her car had filled with water during the storm - and would never run again.

Her bank (if she had any money in it) was closed - in fact, no businesses were open at all in the entire area. All the gas stations were either wrecked or shut down. She was working so she could save up some money to get out. -And there were MANY people in this kind of situation. A neighbor up the road from our base lost THREE CARS that are now parked useless across the street - they had been submerged and would not run. And thus, people get TRAPPED. When people lose "civilized" transport, they have only one option.- They turn to "Third World" transportation. You see them walking everywhere on foot, or riding bicycles. And this is exactly what happened. It is the same with electrical appliances.

I lived in Memphis Tennessee just a few miles from Mississippi. We had a satellite company in Marks MS and I had to routinely go there. I also went to many other areas in Mississippi. Those people were destitute even before Katrina. I often tell the story of stopping at a flea market area along side the road to get a drink. People were selling items for change and haggling over pennies. Someone would offer 12 cents for an item selling for 15 cents. I had never seen anyone negotiate over pennies. Much of the economy in Mississippi revolves around prisons and welfare. People that get jobs as guards at prisons routinely end up in prison themselves for smuggling dope and weapons into the prisons. The people do need to leave MS. They need education. They need to quit reproducing, which could be covered under education. Long lines of big families have lived on nothing but welfare their whole lives. Girls are having babies at 13 and 14 years old. It is a horrible mess. They are often toothless and grandmothers before they reach 30. I think it may be worse than a 3rd world country. It is difficult to talk to the poor. They have no vocabulary and you can barely understand them if you can understand them at all.
