Cosmic Rays from a Mysterious, Nearby Object

Nov. 19, 2008: An international team of researchers has discovered a puzzling surplus of high-energy electrons bombarding Earth from space. The source of these cosmic rays is unknown, but it must be close to the solar system and it could be made of dark matter. Their results are being reported in the Nov. 20th issue of the journal Nature.

"This is a big discovery," says co-author John Wefel of Louisiana State University. "It's the first time we've seen a discrete source of accelerated cosmic rays standing out from the general galactic background."

Galactic cosmic rays are subatomic particles accelerated to almost light speed by distant supernova explosions and other violent events. They swarm through the Milky Way, forming a haze of high energy particles that enter the solar system from all directions. Cosmic rays consist mostly of protons and heavier atomic nuclei with a dash of electrons and photons spicing the mix.

To study the most powerful and interesting cosmic rays, Wefel and colleagues have spent the last eight years flying a series of balloons through the stratosphere over Antarctica. Each time the payload was a NASA-funded cosmic ray detector named ATIC, short for Advanced Thin Ionization Calorimeter. The team expected ATIC to tally the usual mix of particles, mainly protons and ions, but the calorimeter found something extra: an abundance of high-energy electrons.

Wefel likens it to driving down a freeway among family sedans, mini-vans and trucks—when suddenly a bunch of Lamborghinis bursts through the normal traffic. "You don't expect to see so many race cars on the road—or so many high-energy electrons in the mix of cosmic rays." During five weeks of ballooning in 2000 and 2003, ATIC counted 70 excess electrons in the energy range 300-800 GeV. ("Excess" means over and above the usual number expected from the galactic background.) Seventy electrons may not sound like a great number, but like seventy Lamborghinis on the freeway, it's a significant surplus.

"The source of these exotic electrons must be relatively close to the solar system—no more than a kiloparsec away," says co-author Jim Adams of the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center.

Why must the source be nearby? Adams explains: "High-energy electrons lose energy rapidly as they fly through the galaxy. They give up energy in two main ways: (1) when they collide with lower-energy photons, a process called inverse Compton scattering, and (2) when they radiate away some of their energy by spiraling through the galaxy's magnetic field." By the time an electron has traveled a whole kiloparsec, it isn't so 'high energy' any more.

High-energy electrons are therefore local. Some members of the research team believe the source could be less than a few hundred parsecs away. For comparison, the disk of the spiral Milky Way galaxy is about thirty thousand parsecs wide. (One parsec approximately equals three light years.)

"Unfortunately," says Wefel, "we can't pinpoint the source in the sky." Although ATIC does measure the direction of incoming particles, it's difficult to translate those arrival angles into celestial coordinates. For one thing, the detector was in the basket of a balloon bobbing around the South Pole in a turbulent vortex of high-altitude winds; that makes pointing tricky. Moreover, the incoming electrons have had their directions scrambled to some degree by galactic magnetic fields. "The best ATIC could hope to do is measure a general anisotropy—one side of the sky versus the other."

This uncertainty gives free rein to the imagination. The least exotic possibilities include, e.g., a nearby pulsar, a 'microquasar' or a stellar-mass black hole—all are capable of accelerating electrons to these energies. It is possible that such a source lurks undetected not far away. NASA's recently-launched Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope is only just beginning to survey the sky with sufficient sensitivity to reveal some of these objects.

An even more tantalizing possibility is dark matter.

There is a class of physical theories called "Kaluza-Klein theories" which seek to reconcile gravity with other fundamental forces by positing extra dimensions. In addition to the familiar 3D of human experience, there could be as many as eight more dimensions woven into the space around us. A popular yet unproven explanation for dark matter is that dark matter particles inhabit the extra dimensions. We feel their presence via the force of gravity, but do not sense them in any other way.

How does this produce excess cosmic rays? Kaluza-Klein particles have the curious property (one of many) that they are their own anti-particle. When two collide, they annihilate one another, producing a spray of high-energy photons and electrons. The electrons are not lost in hidden dimensions, however, they materialize in the 3-dimensions of the real world where ATIC can detect them as "cosmic rays."

"Our data could be explained by a cloud or clump of dark matter in the neighborhood of the solar system," says Wefel. "In particular, there is a hypothesized Kaluza-Klein particle with a mass near 620 GeV which, when annihilated, should produce electrons with the same spectrum of energies we observed."

Testing this possibility is nontrivial because dark matter is so, well, dark. But it may be possible to find the cloud by looking for other annihilation products, such as gamma-rays. Again, the Fermi Space Telescope may have the best chance of pinpointing the source.

"Whatever it is," says Adams, "it's going to be amazing."

That is interesting as many ancient cultures mention the Pleiades, (the star system of which Alcyone belongs) I also believe that the entrance to the Pyramid of the sun at Teotihuacan in Mexico was aligned to the Pleiades and that the Mayans referred to them as the Tzab "rattle" because they resembled the tail of a rattle snake.

The distinctive star cluster within the constellation of Taurus has long served humankind as the signal for the turn of the seasons. Their ancient rise in May signalled the coming warmth of summer; their setting the cold of winter. Of far greater utility than the solsticial extremes of the sun in deep winter or high summer, the Pleiades provided the signals for the seasonal transitions and the timing of agricultural practices vital to the well-being of communities. The cluster appears in mythologies from around the world (for a review see Pleiade.org's 'The Pleiades in mythology') and presented here are reports from the ancient sources relating to the Pleiades and the Celtic calendar system.
The Pleiades May Rising

By the time of the rise of the Celtic culture as a distinct member of the Indo-European family, typically dated to the eighth century BC with the Hallstatt archaeological period, the Pleiades had been long recognised for their significance. From the Bronze age of Europe has been discovered a bronze device, the 'Nebra Star Disc', dated to 1600BC, featuring the Sun, Moon and Pleiades (see: Landesmuseum für Vorgeschichte website). The Greek poet Hesiod wrote of their astronomical signposting in the eighth century BC as the iron age reached Europe (Hesiod, Works and Days, 380). The Celts of Britain and Gaul marked a thirty year celestial cycle completed when Saturn returned to the sign of Taurus (Plutarch, De Facie, Loeb p.185) marking an 'age' in their calendar system, as recorded by Pliny the Elder in the first century AD (Natural History, 17.95). The rise of the Pleiades also marked the completion of a lunar festival in Britain, as the moon completed a nineteen year Metonic cycle (Diodorus, Library of History 2,47).

The rising of the Pleiades occurs when their celestial appearance over the eastern horizon co-incides with the rising of the sun. In the first millennium BC, this occurred in May, though today they rise in June. The May rise of the Pleiades and Taurus is co-incident with the Celtic festival for the start of summer, Beltaine. When the Roman calendar was introduced into Ireland in the fifth century AD, the month of May was rendered as Cétemain, from cet-Samhin, 'the first of summer' (McBain, 1982), maintaining the ancient beginning of summer in the Celtic world.

In 503BC a spectacular Pleiades rising was visible across Europe, with Saturn rising in Taurus, accompanied by Jupiter, Venus and Mercury, and with Mars close by in Aries. Co-incident with the start of a Celtic thirty year cycle, this planetary alignment brought all the visible planets together on the eastern horizon. It was about 500BC that the Celtic La Tène archaeological period opened, the flourish of Celtic culture.




The Nebra Star Disc

The Pleiades were recorded in Bronze age Europe as a cluster of stars on the 'Nebra Star Disk', dating to around 1600BC and produced from metals found in Europe (Secrets of the Star Disc, 2004). The disc combines images of the Sun and Moon, an arc delineating the angle on the horizon produced between solsticial extremes, and a star-field in which appear a distinctive cluster of seven stars, the Pleiades. The disc is presently exhibited at the Landesmuseum für Vorgeschichte in Halle, Germany, described as "an in-depth view of the astronomical knowledge" of pre-historic Europeans (Landesmuseum website).

THE GREEK MYTH OF PLEIADES IN THE ARCHAEOLOGY OF NATURAL DISASTERS.
DECODING, DATING AND ENVIRONMENTAL INTERPRETATION

ABSTRACT


The strong multi-symbolic archetype of the Pleiades functions as a worldwide astromythological system going back to Upper Palaeolithic Era. The Greek version of the myth seems to embody a wide range of environmental symbolism, as it incorporates various information and very archaic elements about: a) the periodicity of the solstices and the equinoxes, b) the fluctuations on the biochemical structure of Earth's atmosphere related to the global hydro -climatic phenomenon of ENSO, c) probable past observations of brightening of a star (nova) in the cluster of Pleiades, d) the primordial elements of the mythological nucleus of Atlantis' legend and e) the remnants of Palaeolithic 'proto-European' moon culture.

INTRODUCTION


The Archaeology of Natural Disasters (Blaikie et al. 1994; Byrne 1997; Torrence and Grattan 2002; World 2002): a) defines the identity, the impact and the dynamics of natural hazards into the evolution of human civilization (biological, ecological, environmental, socio-economic, political, technological, geographical and cultural results), b) tries to find and analyze the kinds, frequency and magnitude of natural hazards that are hidden in the
"archaeological landscapes", c) searches for the adaptation process in past human societies and the "unfamiliar landscapes" formed after natural disasters.


On the other hand, the major task in studying the ancient myths is to realize the realms of various human mental areas and distinguish between allegory/ metaphor and imagination, analogy and reason, folklore tale and legend, fiction/fantasy and fallacy/lie, dream scientific hypothesis and the truth. In ancient myths, there is an incredible storehouse of wisdom about human nature collected over centuries of observation. The myths are stories in which the surface structure is false, because things did not happen exactly that way, but the deep structure is true.


In fact, one of the most powerful symbols of all ancient mythologies, marker of the events recorded by the different cultures of the world with almost uncanny accuracy, the Pleiades, comprise one of the oldest known time capsule cryptogram. Furthermore, the Greek literature suggests strong associations with other ancient sources from all over the world. Pleiades are characterized as one of the most sacred astral systems. Let us begin this fascinating trip. Cave paintings, History, Poetry, Mythology, Astronomy, all Literature contains recurrent allusions to them ( Jobes and Jobes 1964).

Also the planet x theory was to come from this area, instead of it being referred to as a snakes tail it was the dragons tail. We should know more about this anomaly by the year 2012 and the true effect it will have on us all.

Thanks for posting this Elitecamper, although I did have to print it off and read it at my own leisure.

As you know the Earth's magnetic field & our atmosphere are what shields us from harmful solar winds.

IF, and I say, IF we have a significant meteor storm combined with other atmospheric anomalies as described in this article, you need to suspect the possibility of an as yet undetected large (Close proximity) astral body.


IF, that happens you may have little or no warning because your Governments are CROOKS and want a big kill off.

A large body passing close to earth will take down our defensive shield and the surface will be subjected to lethal Solar radiation.

Do not dismiss this as impossible because it will happen at some point.


IF it does, you can be thankful to die quickly if you are not prepared.


The first sign to look out for will be a meteorite showers as debris often travels in front of and behind these large interstellar nomads.

Like I say, do or don't take advice its your call.

There is more to this than just hearsay, there is historical circumstantial evidence in abundance but I have no intention or time to go into that here.

If the super heating does happen, that air will rise, then as it cools and cools and cools it will become very Cold & heavy, then quickly fall back down to the surface "FREEZING" you instantly.

Be advised - this has happened and will happen and will keep happening its just a part of nature.

I'm glad you liked it Nostalgia. This scientific news story broke out this week and I felt that there were possible correlations between it and the writings of Samael Aun Weor, I felt there were strong possibilities of that. As of right now we actually have very little information, science is discovering how little it knows. They have no idea what this mysterious object could be or what is the originating source of this radiation.

Alot of people are scratching their heads right now, they don't have answers but these things have already been talked about and these things have already been expected.

I feel that in the coming years we are going to learn more, as we acquire more data samples, and use new tools and instruments to study this phenomena. Hopefully we can discover the originating source of these high energy particles. Hopefully that happens... as man seems very close minded, like when man believed the world to be flat, and the center of the universe.

There were those in those times that tried to explain to humanity the truths but humanity would not accept them no matter what. Until eventually the truth had to be confronted.

It remains to be seen how this story will unfold. I personally am happy to be familiar with Samael Aun Weors writings. I know there are materialists and many skeptics, but the skeptics are skeptical about everything and don't have any answers. It's better to be open minded about things in my opinion.
