Tributes paid to Che
Tributes paid to Che
(Thursday 09 October 2008)
LATIN Americans paid tribute to revolutionary leader Che Guevara on Wednesday in the Bolivian village where he was executed in 1967.
The small village of La Higuera in Vallegrande was the scene of the commemorations of the 41st anniversary of the assassination of the Argentinian doctor turned Cuban revolutionary guerilla fighter.
Representatives of Bolivian organisations and Cuban and Venezuelan solidarity missions gathered at the historic site for a ceremony, including presentations of masters' degrees by Cuban doctors.
Several members of the solidarity brigades were also awarded distinctions in the fields of health, education and energy.
Cuba's Public Health Ministry announced on Wednesday that a record number of almost 200,000 young people are now studying medical sciences in the socialist republic which has a population of just 11 million. The degrees include medicine, dentistry and nursing, health, technology and psychology.

A most noble, most exceptional man
Havana. October 8, 2008

CHE… is one of the most noble, exceptional and altruistic men I have ever known, which would have no importance if one did not believe that people like him exist in their millions, millions and millions among the masses. People who stand out in a singular manner would not be able to do anything, if many millions, like him, did not have the embryo or did not have the capacity to acquire those qualities. That is why our Revolution took so much interest in fighting against illiteracy and developing education, so that everyone would be like Che.
—Fidel, in his conversations with Ignacio Ramonet

U.S blockade attacking Cuban

The negative impact of this punitive measure on the part of the United States is particularly affecting teaching in vocational schools and in special schools for young people with disabilities.
The latter is exemplified by the virtually insurmountable obstacles faced by the Cuban educational authorities in their attempts to acquire diagnostic, didactic, and computer equipment manufactured in the United States.
These prohibitions extend to spare parts and other materials, not only those manufactured in U.S. territory, but also those produced by subsidiary companies in third countries.
A Cuban report presented to the UN stated that during 2007, this particularly affected 16 schools for hearing-impaired children, and day care centers requiring specialist equipment for the development of auditory perception.
In the last year, Washington’s intransigence has prevented the island from obtaining hearing aids and TDDs, given that the sale of these items is prohibited as if they were lethal weapons.
This also means that 2,230 children with physical motor difficulties – who receive outpatient care from the state – were unable to receive computer equipment which, if it had been purchased from the United States, would have been cheaper and would arrived more quickly. (PL)
