With Alito, GOP takeover complete
By Terrance J. Foyle
Judge Alito’s confirmation to the Supreme Court marks a historic day in the transformation of America. With Republicans now controlling all three branches of government, Alito’s ascension spells the end of the two-party system, and heralds the dictatorship of the right wing.
We have moved past a president who rules as if a king and a Senate and House flush with corporate money and rife with corruption, to a judiciary packed with ideologues anxious to refashion the Constitution and nullify the Bill of Rights. The agenda first set forward during the Reagan administration is now fully realized. America is well on it’s way to becoming the corporate plutocracy and enduring police state long fantasized by the ruling elite.
Of course, credit must also be paid to the so-called opposition. None of this would have been possible without the ineptitude and complicity of the Democratic party. Ever since Republicans capitalized on the tragic events of 9/11 and made the irrational fear of terror a twisted loyalty test, the Democrats have offered the meekest of protests and have mostly rubber stamped the President’s twin destructive policies of war for oil in the Mideast, and war against the poor at home.
The times are reminiscent of another once powerful empire long ago. It is said that Emperor Tiberius, when he learned of the Roman Senate’s offer to quickly make law any proposal made by him, asked them this in response, "Are you all so eager to become slaves?" That same question could very well be asked today of all our elected representatives.
