US pledges thorough probe of rape allegations
The top U.S. military chief vowed Tuesday to conduct a thorough investigation of allegations that a former American soldier raped and murdered an Iraqi woman and killed her three family members in March this year.
Speaking on CBS television, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Peter Pace said the military would “get to the bottom of these allegations.”
“And for those who stray, if they have, we will investigate and we will take proper action,” he said.
Steven Green, 21, was charged in court in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Monday with raping and killing a Iraqi woman and killing her three family members, including a five-year-old girl, near Mahmudiayh, south of Baghdad, on March 12.
Green, who had served with the 101st Airborne Division, was arrested on Friday, and if convicted, he could face the death penalty for the murders and a life sentence for the rape. Enditem
