UK is number 2 for RFID usage

TUV

A new index has ranked the UK as second only to the USA in its adoption of RFID.

According to a new study by consultancy firm IDTechEx, the UK is in second place in terms of quantity, Computing magazine has reported.

However, while the UK has fewer than 300 RFID implementations, the USA has over 800 RFID implementations.

Peter Harrop, chairman of IDTechEx, told the magazine: “The reason why the UK is so high up the league by number of cases is because we’ve got the largest city in Europe with 7.2 million Oyster cards.”

He added: “Our military force is also bigger than any other in Europe and we are using RFID to tag vehicles, trailers and missiles, or anything with a value of over £3,000.”

Marks & Spencer recently announced that it is to roll out product-level RFID tagging in all its stores.

This means that the number of M&S stores using RFID tagging will rise form 42 to almost 450.

TUV Product Service, part of the TÜV SÜD Group of companies with 1bn Euros turnover, in excess of 9,500 employees and 500 locations worldwide, is a leading provider of Compliance and Assurance Solutions for the RFID sector.
