Campaign to put XXX where it belongs.

02/04/06 (RINF) – This is not an emotional campaign, nor is it an issue of ethics. This does not condone , or attempt to censor any type of pornography. This implies no disrespect to any religious group. This is a technical / administrative issue that relates to all netizens.

In the context of the World Wide Web pornography is every ware. It resides in ‘user accounts’ on all the mainstream media web portals from y7 (Aussies newest) to abc.net.au. It surfaces in all flavors of search engine [Goggles Page Rank(tm.) algorithm improves this, as do options like ’safe search’ ]. Parents want to restrict their children from pornographic material, as do many public access sites. Academics and professionals want to be able to search with out having to filter results. We all know the issues.

The addition of a category dedicated solely to ‘pornographic content’ is not a new one, and is in by no means ‘my’ cause. I am researching the background of this of this idea and will present it in the future. In short all that was proposed is the addition of .xxx to the URL address protocol. Therefore .gov = government interest, .edu= educational institution .xxx could = pornographic content. Simple as!

The right wing Christian movement in the USA blocked this and due to the considerable political influence of this group, none of their legislators want to push this subject for fear of reprisals. Enforcing a compulsory categorization of sites with pornographic content does nothing to ‘promote’ pornography’ as argued by the Christian movement. The unrealistic implementation of some sort of porno-prohibition is what the Christian movement propose, maybe they can save up and buy Internet2(tm.).

The global Internet community is partly being governed, albeit in a de facto way, by a radical religious group with a political agenda. This is unacceptable! [perhaps the Christian movement doesn’t want to ‘organize’ porn on the web, they want it all over the place like it is. This makes a great case for more uniform outright censorship in the future ? ..a bit fatalistic perhaps… ]

Lets me put this in perspective ; if a influential Muslim group were to attempt to influence the administration of something as ‘global’ as the Internet, it would be an outrage. Lets send a message to our legislators ; religion, in all its glorious forms has no place in the architecture of the Internet.

The Internet, or more accurately the forum for discussion it provides is raising our collective IQ as a race. For the first time in history we are able to act outside the stereotypes applied to our skin colour or personal belief structure As a result average people ever ware are given an equal opportunity to become involved with issues close to them on a personal level.

The socialist nature of the net allows the pursuit of porn to be equal in importance to the pursuit of academic research is equal in importance to shopping etc. The exploration of ideas, ideals and information is what educators and researchers created when they set up the net. The fact is commercial and religious entities in the context of the Internet are just guests.
