Bomb Squad Called Out For Bag Of Doughnuts
An angry woman who dropped off a suspicious package at a Palm Desert fire station Sunday, motivating firefighters to call the bomb squad to investigate, was apparently trying to do a good deed.
The suspicious package turned out to be a bag of doughnuts.
The woman entered the Palm Desert Riverside County Fire Station around 11:20 a.m., and firefighters mistook her for a woman who frequently stops by the station to berate firefighters, said Deputy Chris Durham of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.
Capt. John Harvey of the Riverside County Fire Department said the woman also left some loose papers with the package. He did not say what was written on the papers, if anything.
The bomb squad closed the Portola Avenue and Country Club Drive, two busy thoroughfares, for about an hour to deal with the paper bag, which “turned out be be a bag of doughnuts and a thank-you card,” Durham said.
“Apparently she was thanking the firefighters for all their hard work,” he said.
Deputies tried to find find the woman from her license plate, but were unsuccessful. Nevertheless, “she’s no longer a suspect,” Durham said.
There was no word on how deputies disposed of the doughnuts.
