Having lived in Poland during the communist times and the martial law of 1982/83, I can say that there is no much difference between then in Poland and today in the UK. The only two differencies are that you can still buy fairly most of goods you want provided you have money, and that some free elections on local level are still allowed. Although the leaders, (ministers) and international organisations such as ICAO or FATF that create the law for us are now unelected.

The difference between the communist era and today is also that before if you really wanted and put effort, you could escape to a free country. Today there are no more free countries to escape to - they are either authoritarian police states or third world countries with no perspectives.
