The European elections may not be held on June 4 2009.

News item yesterday:

"The European Parliament should delay its elections if there is a chance the Lisbon Treaty may come into force shortly after the scheduled June 2009 poll date, Romanian MEP Adrian Severin has told PAP. The MEP helped draft new Lisbon rules, such as raising the number of MEPs from 736 to 751."

It's to give more time to squeeze in a second referendum in Ireland, and get a "Yes" vote - but would it be legal?

Article 190 TEC says "Representatives shall be elected for a term of five years." and the last elections (at least in the UK) were on June 10th 2004.

Nevertheless, I suppose it might be legally permissible to have a gap of several months before new MEPs were elected?
