OK, so this might put it all off by 50 years if we're lucky Peter, but hen what? - We're faced with the same problem but in a much worse environment. In a historical study of populations, resource extraction leads to increased pop, and decline of the resource. When the large pop realises the decline of the resource is unsustainable, it paniks and desperately attempts to extract all the remaining resource. This means that the reduced next generation (post-pop-crash) will have not even a tiny amount on which to survive, and the ecosystem they're in is all but destroyed.

It would be bad if the efforts of responsible countries like Denmark are rewarded by higher energy prices, and the oil being burned anyway (but by other countries who enjoy lower energy prices).. End result, oil reserves still depleted and green countries experiencing higher costs and brown countries enjoying lower costs!!!

I'm grateful my best friend has a nice plot of land and a lot of guns and ammo. I predict world war 3 is coming. There really is no way to sustain 8 billion people without fossil fuels. There isn't.

I think peak oil is much more serious then climate change. Climate change may kill polar bears but peak oil kills people. People in the third world are already suffering because higher oil and gas meana less fertilizer and less food. Plus biofuel production is reducing the supply of oil.

Here is what we need to do. Conserve more, develop more public transport, drill more, develop the oil sands, nuclear, wind, solar, geothermal, tidal, and use coal not natural gas to make electricity.

Finally we have to start using natural gas as a transport fuel. We should not use gas to heat our home as nuclear, coal powered electricity as well as geothermal can do that. We certainly have to stop wasting good natural gas to make electricity. We should use coal for that.

Use the natural gas we save by using coal for electricity as a transportation fuel replacing gasoline from oil.

Very good abstract of current situation.
I am thankful that I live in Denmark, where high energy taxes - gas being US$ 9 a gallon - and substantial investments in alternative energy sources - 25% of our electricity comes from wind - makes us a little bit better off on the slope downhill from peak. Let's use the remaining oil wisely for the final transition away from fossil fuels.
